What we're about...
Since 2009 Buttercream Bakery has been baking and delivering bespoke cakes, cupcakes, cake pops & cookies around Sydney.
In 2015 we quietly opened our small boutique bakery in the creative hub of Precinct 75, St Peters.
We specialise in buttercream creations – most notably our signature hand painted buttercream cakes.
Our buttercream flavours are constantly changing from matcha, cookie dough, chai to purple yam, we’re sure we have you covered!
It all started with my Aunty Grace. As a kid, I would sit in her kitchen and watch her bake and decorate cakes for our family birthdays (and trust me, we have a very big Filipino family, so this was almost every weekend!). Being keen on drawing, painting, sketching, sculpting early on, I was easily mesmerised by some of her creations. Elaborate and delicate floral piping on five-tier cake structures with water fountain centrepieces (well it was the 80s after all!). I remember thinking I wanted to be just like her.
I ended up pursuing cake-making as a hobby (sadly sans the water features) – baking cakes on the weekends for family and friends. I studied Graphic Design and worked in the field for several years but in 2009 started day-dreaming about a career change.
My brother was also looking at other career prospects and wanted to run his own business and he came to me with the idea of starting an online cake store & delivering to people’s doorsteps. There weren't many online cake stores at the time. Using recipes passed down from our Aunty Grace we started Buttercream Bakery.
We renovated our parent’s garage in western Sydney and created a small industrial kitchen and enlisted the help of my cousin to drive around our little Honda to make deliveries. Armed with my hand mixer, Buttercream Bakery started with cupcakes and soon branched out into cakes, cookies, cake pops and other baked goods. As our product line increased so did business (and the late nights in the kitchen). In 2014, we decided to take a big leap and expand into a larger kitchen.
In choosing our location and designing the new bakery, we took inspiration from Brooklyn, NYC - the place where my husband and I got married. We chose Precinct 75 in St Peters as the old factory brickwork reminded us of Brooklyn’s D.U.M.B.O district and it was also an emerging home of other creatives – designers, photographers, artists. Buttercream Bakery quietly opened its doors to the public last year in June.
Our team is now made up of myself, my brother, my cousin, and my husband. Together we’ve been working hard on building Buttercream Bakery. We’d love for you to follow the next steps in our journey!
